He completed his studies in Catholic theology in 1979 and his PhD in Catholic theology at UNISTRA in 1986 and qualified in 2001. He became Professor of Catholic theology in Strasbourg (since 2001) and dean of the Faculty of Catholic Theology at UNISTRA. (2000-2009). In 2014, he was named a knight of the French National Order of Merit.

From 2009-2012 to 2013-2016, he was First Vice-President of UNISTRA, responsible for finance in the first period, and then for learning and teaching in the second period. Since 2017, Michel Deneken has been President of UNISTRA. He is the head of the “Alsacian site association” together with the University of Haute-Alsace and 5 other engineering schools in Strasbourg. A founding member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU) and its equivalent network in France (CURIF), Michel Deneken is convinced that learning and research play an crucial role in the innovation process and contribute significantly to the progress of society.
